Parametric EQ Advanced

Shape eight bands across stereo, mid and side.

About

An eight-band equalizer for mixing, with two extras over the everyday Parametric EQ: each band can work on the left, right, mid or side channel instead of the whole stereo signal, and bell bands can turn dynamic, cutting only when that part of the sound gets too loud.

Controls

Every band has a Type (Bell, Low Shelf, High Shelf, Low Cut, High Cut or Notch), Frequency, Q and Gain. Cut bands also have a Cut slope, from 12 to 48 dB per octave. Output trims the final level.

  • Channel chooses what a band acts on: Stereo, Left, Right, Mid (what the two sides share, usually the centre of the mix) or Side (the difference, usually the width). Splitting into mid and side and back leaves the sound unchanged when no band is active.
  • Dynamic bell turns a bell band from a fixed boost or cut into one that reacts to the music. When the energy around the band's frequency rises above Threshold, the band reduces it by up to Reduction range, with its own Attack and Release. The static Gain still applies underneath. In stereo, both channels are reduced together, so the image does not shift.

The display shows the real input and output spectrum next to the EQ curve. The curve shows the shape of the bands only, without output trim or dynamic movement.

Getting started

Play a mix, a vocal or a bus through it. The preset bank includes all of the everyday Parametric EQ recipes, from Flat to vocal, drum, bass and guitar starting points, plus four that use the extras:

  • Vocal · Dynamic sibilance tames harsh "s" sounds only when they occur. Adjust the frequency to the singer.
  • Bus · Dynamic low mids holds back low-mid build-up when it crosses the threshold.
  • M/S · Mid clarity adds a gentle presence lift to the centre only.
  • M/S · Side air adds a little high shelf to the sides only; a mono source has no side signal, so it will not change.

Limits

The dynamic bands listen to the signal being equalized; there is no external sidechain input. Linear-phase filtering, spectral dynamics and EQ matching are not part of this module.
