LFO

A low-frequency oscillator for modulation.

A stage of OSC-1. It works the same on its own page as it does in the chain, same parameters, same paths.

About

A low-frequency oscillator for the rack: a slow, repeating wave that moves another module's setting for you. Point it at pitch for vibrato, at a filter for a sweep, or at amplitude for tremolo.

Controls

  • Rate sets the speed, from 0.1 to 20 cycles per second. Below 1 Hz it is a slow drift; above about 8 Hz it stops sounding like movement and starts changing the timbre itself.
  • Shape picks the wave: sine (the default, smooth and even), sawtooth, square or triangle.
  • Depth sets how far the wave moves its destination.
  • Target says what the LFO is meant to move: pitch, filter or amplitude.

The picture on the panel shows one ideal cycle of the chosen shape and depth. It is a diagram of the settings, not a live display of where the wave is.

Getting started

Add LFO to a rack and connect its output to the module you want to animate. Start with the default, a 4 Hz sine at half depth, then lower Rate for slow sweeps or raise it for a faster wobble.

The LFO runs freely: it has no tempo sync, transport or phase reset, so it does not restart on each note or lock to the beat.

How it works.

One LFO running free (it does not retrigger per note) into a single destination, scaled by Depth against that destination's own range - cents for pitch, hertz for the filter, linear gain for amplitude. Those ranges are the ones the source schema declares.

One target rather than a routing matrix is a deliberate limit of this port, not a claim about the eventual engine. The source synth has a full routing list with per-route amounts; that arrives with the mod-matrix work, and this stage's param path stays valid when it does.

What would you make with LFO?

Describe what you want to make. Build it with the Studio agent.

Goes well with.

Prototype

A complete synth built from separate modules.

Building block

Periodic amplitude modulation with stereo phase control.
