Chord Seq

Generate a progression, then route or export its MIDI.

About

A chord progression generator that plays its result as MIDI and hands it to you as a MIDI clip. Pick a starting chord and a length, press Generate, and Chord Seq writes a progression, voices it smoothly and plays it in time with your session.

The idea

Chord Seq uses a small AI language model from the open-source ChordSeqAI project. Instead of words, it has learned which chords tend to follow which, and it writes a progression one chord at a time. You steer how adventurous it is, and a seed makes every result repeatable: the same settings and seed always give the same progression.

The chords are then voiced in close position around the octave you choose, each one placed near the chord before it, so the progression moves smoothly instead of jumping between root-position blocks. Each chord in the list is labelled with its harmonic role (tonic, predominant, dominant or chromatic) and a tension bar.

If the model is still loading or cannot run, Chord Seq says so and plays a simple I-vi-IV-V progression instead, so there is always something to hear.

Controls

Generation

  • Chords: how many chords to write, from 2 to 16.
  • Starting root and Starting quality (major or minor) set the first chord.
  • Temperature: low values stay with the most likely next chord; high values take more surprising turns.
  • Top K: how many candidate chords the model may choose from at each step. Smaller is safer, larger is wilder.
  • Seed: picks a repeatable variation.

Voicing and output

  • Transpose shifts the whole progression up to an octave either way.
  • Centre octave sets where the voicing sits; Maximum voices caps how many notes each chord uses (2 to 6).
  • Chord rate sets how long each chord lasts against the session clock (1/4, 1/8 or 1/16), Gate how much of that time the notes hold, and MIDI velocity how hard they play.
  • Run plays the progression with the transport.

Getting started

Chord Seq makes MIDI, not sound: connect it to a piano, pad or synth. Start with the Balanced Eight preset, press Generate, and change the seed until you hear something you like. Focused Four is a tighter four-chord loop; Minor Explorer starts on A minor and wanders further.

The MIDI button saves the progression as a standard MIDI file. You can also drag it straight into a DAW.

How it works.

The host resolves the packaged model bytes, owns transport time, and advances the MIDI processor on the block clock. The face requests a progression; it never creates its own AudioContext or advances playback from a UI timer.

Generation produces chord tokens, then the pure voicing stage places those pitch classes near the selected octave with deterministic movement between chords. The same resulting note sequence feeds live MIDI output and file export.

If the model runtime is still loading or unavailable, the face labels and uses its deterministic I-vi-IV-V fallback. Native formats remain unclaimed until they have a compiled control kernel and native inference path.
