P/L/R steps (P up-right, L up-left, R right)
interval for the 3 directions of the hexagonal grid. We use the PLR letters for the 3 directions (P=up-right, L=up-left, R=right), along with a positive or negative int. The lattice closes: L = P - R (parseHexLayout). Exact: reads back to the same value.
