Drumstep

A clock-synced drum grid you can draw directly.

@maru shared this module so you can play it in your DAW, remix it or put it on your site.

Play

What it does

A drum grid you draw on directly. One row per familiar kit voice, one square per step: click to place a hit, click again for an accent, and Drumstep plays the bar as MIDI in time with the session clock.

The idea

Drumstep makes notes, not sound. Its rows follow the General MIDI drum map (kick on note 36, snare on 38, clap on 39, closed hat on 42 and so on), so the pattern lines up with drum racks, hardware pads, drum tracks and standard MIDI files. Connect it to any drum instrument and that instrument does the playing.

The compact view shows ten core rows: kick, snare, rim, clap, low and mid toms, closed and open hats, cymbal and cowbell. The 16-lane view adds ride, high tom, congas, tambourine and shaker. A dark square is silent, a coloured square is a hit, and the brighter capped state is an accent.

Guide and controls

How it works.

The face stores ten 32-cell master lanes and reveals 4, 8, 16 or 32 cells across the same measure. StepLane supplies the three-state click cycle, drag painting, keyboard operation and the fractional playhead, so every row uses the same tested gesture rules.

A shared playback helper arbitrates one clock: the host timeline always wins, while an explicitly local preview supplies PPQ only when the host is stopped. The UI converts that position through the selected division and emits the active column whenever the chosen clock crosses a step.

Each lane has a musical role and an independent output mapping. It defaults to the corresponding General MIDI note on channel 10, but its inline target can address any MIDI note and channel, for example, keeping the generator's Kick logic while triggering a sampler's non-GM kick pad.

Part of Drumstep + Tetra Box rack, Stepmood rack, Drumbox

Goes well with.

Prototype

A sample-free drum synth with ten circuits and sixteen steps.

Prototype

A 32-step Matrix, with ties, ratchets and a curve lane.

Prototype

A step sequencer and arpeggiator on one grid.

Building block

Walk held notes through a rhythmic pattern.
