Chorus

A short modulated delay that widens one voice.

@maru shared this effect so you can play it in your DAW, remix it or put it on your site.

A stage of OSC-1. It works the same on its own page as it does in the chain, same parameters, same paths.

What it does

A stereo chorus: a short delay whose time drifts slowly, blended with the original sound. It detunes and blurs a voice so a thin patch or a clean guitar sounds wider, without adding a single note.

The idea

As the delay time moves, the delayed copy bends slightly sharp and then slightly flat. Heard together with the dry signal, the two copies interfere, and that shifting interference is the chorus sound. Chorus runs one delay line per side, with the left and right sweeps moving in opposite directions, which is what spreads the sound across the stereo field.

Guide and controls

How it works.

A short delay line whose delay time is swept by an LFO at Rate, summed with the dry signal. The sweep Dopplers the delayed copy slightly sharp and flat, and the interference between the two copies is the whole effect.

Because it is interference, the mix control is not a level control: at full wet you lose the comb filtering that makes it sound like chorus and are left with plain vibrato.

Building block

Periodic amplitude modulation with stereo phase control.

Prototype

Phaser and vibrato with independent LFOs.
