Parallel Focus - Latency Lab

Hear and inspect automatic latency compensation.

About

A parallel effect that doubles as a teaching tool for latency compensation. The clean signal runs alongside a filtered, limited copy, and the panel shows how the two paths are kept in time with each other.

The idea

The wet path ends in a lookahead limiter, which needs to see about two milliseconds of audio before it lets it through. That makes the wet path arrive late. Mixed with an undelayed dry path, the two copies would be slightly out of step, which smears attacks and adds a hollow, comb-filtered tone. Maru's engine delays the dry path by exactly the limiter's lookahead, 102 samples at 48 kHz, so both copies meet at the same sample.

Musically, it is a parallel focus effect: the dry path keeps the attack intact while the filtered wet path adds a controlled presence layer under a peak ceiling.

Controls

  • Filter type, Cutoff and Resonance shape the wet path.
  • Input gain, Ceiling and Release set how the limiter treats it.
  • Dry / wet blends the two paths.

Seeing the timing

  • PDC on / Without PDC switches the display between the aligned paths and their raw arrival, without changing what you hear.
  • Run impulse sends one virtual click through the timeline, so you can see the dry path arriving early in the raw view.
  • The panel shows the planned delay, the delay the host reports and whether they match, so a wrong report is visible.
  • Right-click the face, or press Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+D, and open Latency for the full delay tables.

Play something with sharp attacks, such as a picked guitar, so the timing is easy to see and hear.

How it works.

The input splits into a clean dry gain and a wet branch containing a state-variable filter followed by a lookahead limiter.

The limiter needs 102 future samples at 48 kHz. Graph planning propagates that arrival time to the sum and inserts the same 102-frame delay on the dry edge.

The face can visualize the compensated and hypothetical raw timelines without disabling safe processing. Right-click opens the shared diagnostics panel, whose Latency tab shows the executable plan beside the host's runtime report.
