Phase 7C

Six operators with an editable FM matrix.

About

A six-operator FM synthesizer with a fully editable modulation matrix. It is Phase 7 with the fixed algorithms opened up: any operator can modulate any other, itself included, and you choose which operators reach the output.

The idea

A classic FM synth gives you a list of algorithms, fixed wirings between its operators. Phase 7C treats those 32 algorithms as templates instead. Picking one fills in the matrix with its connections, and from there every amount is yours to change: add feedback to any operator, build cycles where operators modulate each other, or send several operators to the output at different levels. When your routing still matches a template, the editor names that algorithm; once you change it, it shows Custom routing.

Controls

Phase 7C keeps the Phase 7 editor pages for operators, envelopes, pitch, LFO and General performance settings, and adds an FM matrix editor:

  • each cell sets how strongly, and with which polarity, one operator modulates another, including itself;
  • each operator has its own output level, so any operator can be heard.

Polyphony, mono and legato, portamento and unison work as in Phase 7 and stay as they are when you change sound.

Getting started

Phase 7C is an instrument: play it from the on-screen keyboard or a MIDI controller. Start with one of the eight Phase 7 Maru Originals voices, such as Copper Steps or Orbit Chime, then open the matrix editor and add a connection to hear what it does. Phase 7C includes no Yamaha factory sounds.

What would you make with Phase 7C?

Describe what you want to make. Build it with the Studio agent.

Goes well with.

Prototype

Six operators, thirty-two ways to turn motion into tone.

Prototype

Two synth voices. One expressive sound.

Prototype

A four-operator FM keyboard with no filter.
