MIDI Channel Router

Send each MIDI channel to its own instrument.

About

Send each MIDI channel to its own instrument. The router takes one MIDI input and gives you sixteen MIDI outputs: each of the sixteen input channels picks an output, or Off to mute it.

What it is for

A sequencer or a MIDI file often carries several parts on different channels: drums on one, bass on another, chords on a third. Put the router in a rack after the source, then connect each output to the instrument that should play that part. The notes keep their original channel as they pass through.

Controls

Each input channel, 1 to 16, has a destination selector: Output 1 to 16, or Off. Several channels can share one output, and the summary shows which inputs land where. Three buttons edit the whole table at once:

  • 1:1 routing sends channel 1 to output 1, channel 2 to output 2, and so on.
  • Mute all turns every channel off.
  • Reset returns every channel to its default, which is the same 1:1 routing the router starts with.

The routing is saved with the rack.

Changing routes while you play

Notes that are already held keep going to the output they started on until they are released, so remapping in the middle of a phrase never leaves a note stuck. The next notes you play follow the new mapping.

Limits

The router moves notes only. Sustain pedal, program changes, pitch bend and MPE are not routed, and it does not split the tracks of a MIDI file into channels by itself.

How it works.

The canonical Processor owns routing and held-note destinations. It routes note events; sustain, program changes, pitch bend and MPE need separate support.

What would you make with MIDI Channel Router?

Describe what you want to make. Build it with the Studio agent.

Goes well with.
